A Combination of Liberal Arts and Christianity Essay Example for Free
A Combination of Liberal Arts and Christianity Essay Two ways of thought and life are combined to make one learning environment. Liberal arts and Christianity seem like two separate concepts to most, but together they create a harmonious setting for an individual to grow in a multitude of ways. A Liberal Arts College creates a life long thinker that becomes adaptable to society using their knowledge to make decisions. In Holmes pg 35 he says, ââ¬Å" Liberal education is an open invitation to join the human race and become more fully human. Its goals are to read and write and thereby think independently, and appreciation of lasting values coupled with the ability to make sound value judgements and live by them, a critical appreciation of the past and responsible creative participation in the future.â⬠We are educated from kindergarden to 12th grade to learn the fundamentals of all subjects with hopes to impact the society as an educated citizen. This hope is continued if we choose to further our education in college with a specific emphasis on a major. Like many students with a major, Christians are faithful students that use the Bible to guide their daily lives, but to the rest of the world they can be viewed as sheltered and limited to their beliefs. This causes a hindering on effectiveness that Christian have in the community and a misunderstanding of the validity of their thoughts. in Holmes pg 6 he supports this thought by saying,â⬠Unless we understand the thought and value-patterns of our day, as well as those of biblical revelation and the Christian community, and unless we speak fluently the language of our contemporaries, we tragically limit our effectiveness.ââ¬Å" With a Christian College education is heightened by integrating literarary works, theories, and concepts to Christian commitment, moral, and faith making a collaboration of endless possibilities. This creates a well rounded opportunity for students to learn at a college with the strengths of both liberal arts and Christianity called a Christian College. We are not limited to any one way of thinking. As people we want to explore and question the how, what, where, and whyââ¬â¢s of the world. The Christian College does not limit the ability of self perception or thought, but encourages the process. Using liberal arts to educate the Christian learner and further their insight in the world is a primary purpose of a Christian College. As stated in Holmes pg 8 ââ¬Å"â⬠¦integration of faith and learning remains the distinctive task of the Christion liberal arts college.â⬠The worldview of Christianity should not beà limited to ones home, but incooperated throughout a persons education to further equipt them for a future that will continue to challenge and question their abilities. In support of this thought, On page 36 Holmes writes on the ever lasting benefits of education,â⬠If the person, including what she becomes in this life, has an eternal destiny, then what I become in the process of education lives on foreverâ⬠¦ Christian liberal arts education has an eternity in view.â⬠For most, being a student is only a fragment of a lifetime. That is why the importance of receiving a well rounded education that a Christian College has to offer is essential to establish a foundation of education to apply to the remaining years of our lives. Learning with a purpose to become a reflective being, and value being, and a responsible agent will prepare an individual to step into the world and make educated, reasonable, and moral decisions. A reflective beings have a passion to learn, ask, and wonder which leads us to analyze and come up with our own thoughts of possibilities. Reflectiveness sometimes leads us to have a birds eye view of a thought as a whole as opposed to thinking in a narrow, closed minded way. Causing us to become more critical thinkers and nurture our natural inquisitions. Holmes states, ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"To teach a person to read and write is to teach him to think for himself, to develop more fully the possession of his God-given powers. He becomes in fact, not just in possibility, a reflective, thinking being.â⬠Next, as value being takes a worldview of everything important to them and acts on those thoughts and feelings for direction. In a Chirstian College we see those values as what God has created in the the reflection of Him, us. Actions we take have effects and the choices of those actions can not be learned by reading a book, but the foundations of values can guide a person towards a better outcome. Last, there is the need to be a responsible agent. As Christians we are accountable for our actions and are governed by our Lord Jesus Christ. Decisions of right and wrong are presented daily, but as a Christian going to a Christian College we are taught the principles of reasoning through education and guided with the righteous path God has called us to live. The world is filled with possibilities and opportunity, but it is the people we become with the help of a Christian College, that steers us on the road to a life of reflection, value, and responsibility. A Christian College provides a basis in creating a holistic person by incooperating faith with a liberalà arts education. To see life as one picture rather than a million tiny pieces in a puzzle can create a smoother transition from college to the real world. Often students face the delema of just figuring it out. There is no how to manual or direction guide of life. As Christians we look to the bible for answers and get the general idea of what should be done with digging into our faith, but the is an element of critical thinking that must be applied. That kind of thinking is learned though a Christian College. ââ¬Å" If a person, including what she becomes in life, has an eternal destiny, then what I become in the process of education lives foreverâ⬠¦Christian liberal arts education has an eternity in view.â⬠(Holmes 36) No one person or book can teach us the do and donââ¬â¢ts in life, but a well round education can prepare us for a life of constant decisions and obst acle to overcome.

Business Strategies :: essays research papers
Strategy evaluation is an attempt to look beyond the obvious facts regarding the short-term health of a business and appraise instead those more fundamental factors and trends that govern success in the chosen field of endeavor. Strategy can also be defined as a set of objectives, policies and plans that, taken together, define the scope of the enterprise and its approach to survival and success. Alternatively, we could say that the particular policies, plans, and objectives of a business express its strategy for coping with a complex competitive environment. A good business strategy can be broadly categorized into functions like consistency, consonance, advantage, and feasibility. A strategy that fails to meet one or more of these criteria is strongly in suspect. It fails to perform at least one of the key functions that are necessary for the survival of the business. Inconsistency in business is not simply a flaw in logic. A key function of strategy is to provide coherence to organizational action. A clear and explicit concept of strategy can foster a climate of tacit coordination that is more efficient than most administrative mechanisms. Organizational conflict and interdepartmental bickering are often symptoms of managerial disorder, but may also indicate problems of strategic inconsistency. It is no exaggeration that to say that competitive strategy is the art of creating or exploiting those advantages that are most telling, enduring, most difficult to duplicate. Competitive strategy, in contrast with generic strategy, focuses on the differences among firms rather than their common missions. Competitive advantages can normally be traced to one of the three roots: (1) superior skills, (2) superior resources, and (3) superior position. Positional advantage is of two types, first mover advantages and reinforcers. First movers may also gain advantages in building distribution channels, in trying up specialized suppliers, or in gaining the attention of customers. Reinforcers are policies and practices acting to strengthen or preserve a strong market position and which are easier to carry because of the position. Other position-based advantages include the ownership of special raw material sources or advantageous long-term supply contracts; being geographically located near k ey customers in a business involving significant fixed investment and high transportation costs; being a leader in a service field that permits or requires the building of a unique experience base while serving clients; being a full-line producer in a market with heavy trade-up phenomena; having a wide reputation for providing a needed for providing a needed product or service trait reliably and dependably. Ray Bradbury Comparative Paper Essay
Ray Bradbury, well-known American author, playwright, and poet, created his success on no more than his high school diploma. He did, however, learn many valuable lessons in life which he incorporates in his works. Ray Bradbury uses figurative language such as irony, personification, and imagery to artistically present his vision of lifeââ¬â¢s morals. Bradburyââ¬â¢s use of irony in his pieces establishes how mankind commonly contradicts himself. In ââ¬Å"The Veldtâ⬠, George and Lydia hear screams that ââ¬Å"sound familiarâ⬠but ignore them. The couple also finds their wallet and scarf and disregards how these items were chewed and covered in blood when they found them. George and Lydia receive their last clue when they enter the nursery and see the lions in the background feasting on an unknown prey. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢ve just been eatingâ⬠¦ [but they] donââ¬â¢t know what. â⬠Ray Bradbury turns these foreshadowing events into irony when the parents are killed by the lions. It is ironic that they have seen the lions devouring something, saw the wallet and scarf, and heard the screams but do not realize that they were the lionââ¬â¢s meal and it was their screams that they heard and the scarf and wallet were chewed by the lions and covered in their own blood. Bradbury also uses irony in the ââ¬Å"Happiness Machine. â⬠Leo Auffmann created a machine which he claimed brought happiness to the occupant. He convinced his wife to ââ¬Å"try it onâ⬠but when she got out she shouted, ââ¬Å"It lies, that Sadness Machine. â⬠This is ironic because what Leo thought was a Happiness Machine is really a Sadness Machine. Leo then finds that true happiness cannot be created by a machine but is found in the heart of his family. In ââ¬Å"There Will Come Soft Rainsâ⬠, the house reads a poem to the emptiness where a family once was. The poem explains how nature ââ¬Å"would not mindâ⬠¦if mankind perished utterly. â⬠It is ironic because the poem is warning the family how the war will destroy them but nature will continue on when that is exactly what has happened. The family has been killed and the house soon after dies but the sun continues to rise and set as if nothing has happened. Personification is another common literary device in Bradburyââ¬â¢s work. It is most prominent in ââ¬Å"There Will Come Soft Rains. â⬠Bradbury describes the house with human like qualities in how it defends itself against the fire which is also personified. The house ââ¬Å"quivered at each soundâ⬠and is described as the attic being the brain and the exposed oak beams as ââ¬Å"its bare skeletonâ⬠and all of ââ¬Å"its nerves revealed. â⬠The fire was personified when it ââ¬Å"fed upon Picassos and Matissesâ⬠¦ [and] lay in beds, stood in windows. â⬠Bradbury also described the fire as being ââ¬Å"cleverâ⬠as it attacked ââ¬Å"the attic brainâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rushed back into every closet and felt of the clothes hung there. â⬠Bradbury also uses personification in ââ¬Å"The Foghorn. â⬠He gives the foghorn human-like characteristics when relating it to the monster. The foghorn made a ââ¬Å"great deep cryâ⬠that vibrated in the ââ¬Å"throat of the towerâ⬠as the ââ¬Å"light, switching its tail,â⬠shone bright in the distance. Bradbury continues to use personification in ââ¬Å"The Veldt. â⬠The nursery that Wendy and Peter spend most of their time in is described with human-like qualities. The walls changed from blankness to the veldt with a ââ¬Å"purrâ⬠and ââ¬Å"reproduced to the final pebble and bit of straw. â⬠It is further personified when the room itself kills the parents. Bradbury also frequently uses imagery in his work. In ââ¬Å"The Pedestrianâ⬠, he described the highways as ââ¬Å"only dry riverbedsâ⬠empty of vehicles. Bradbury also points out the ââ¬Å"tomblike buildingsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"gray phantomsâ⬠along the sides of the road. These vivid descriptions allow the reader to feel the loneliness and absence of life in the city and its streets. The imagery in ââ¬Å"The Pedestrianâ⬠sets the mood and describes the setting. ââ¬Å"The Foghornâ⬠portrays another source of imagery. Bradbury makes the reader visualize the ââ¬Å"long grey lawn of the sea stretching away into nothing and nowhereâ⬠with his descriptive vocabulary. He describes how the ââ¬Å"stone towerâ⬠emitted a light that flashed red and white out to the ââ¬Å"lonely shipsâ⬠ââ¬Å"in the cold water far from land. â⬠This makes the reader understand how secluded McDunn and Johnny were out at the lighthouse and intensifies the oddness of the appearance of the sea monster. Imagery is also present when McDunn explains to Johnny how the monster ââ¬Å"hid away in the Deeps. â⬠The way he describes the ââ¬Å"Deepsâ⬠makes it all seem magical yet realistic. Bradbury continues to use imagery in ââ¬Å"The Happiness Machine. â⬠Towards the end of the short story, Leo discovers a real happiness machine. When he describes this ââ¬Å"machine,â⬠he makes the reader visualize a pleasant and warm home filled with joy. This example of imagery contrasts how Bradbury typically uses his words to display desolation and despair. Ray Bradbury expresses similar patterns in his work by using irony, personification, and imagery. He writes with these three types of figurative language in different ways in all of his pieces of work. Bradbury takes common techniques of writing and makes them his own by using them in a certain way to present his ideas in a unique style.
